2020 is the year of celebrating the wildflowers that grow in gardens along cobblestone streets, that rest in a bouquet on my mom’s dining room table, that paint acres of land golden yellow. The Wildflower Desk Calendar features my original illustrations of my favourite seasonal flowers, from sunflowers to ranuculus, prairie roses, and winter jasmine, corresponding with each month of the year to welcome the changes each season brings and celebrate what grows in different periods throughout the year.
The cover page — a trio of peonies — inspired the style and vision for the calendar. Earlier in the year, I sketched this peony image as an ode to my mom’s favourite flower that she grows in our garden in the late spring and that fills our house with its sweet scent as we open up our bedroom windows during the nights to enjoy a gentle breeze. The flower has always been nostalgic to me and its large, floppy petals and pastel shades of pink that characterize the spring months — the season of hope and renewal. To me, then, it made sense that this flower would decorate the calendar’s cover page — an invitation for you to welcome in 2020 like you do the spring and its petals.
